Volunteer Hub

Our central source of available volunteer roles open to active OVDRA members. The Volunteer Hub is updated regularly with positions available for time-certain projects as well as regular committee openings.

Committee Description: Increase student, resident and faculty awareness of developmental optometry, involvement in OVDRA and OVDRA membership. Enhance student/resident/extern/faculty relationships, as well as that with private practice doctors in the area of developmental vision care. Coordinate student/resident travel grant program and OVDRA Student Associate Programs. Coordinate student/resident presentations and meetings at National Meeting and monitor Resident Booth in exhibit hall. Coordinate communications with national student and resident liaisons and develop communications with Schools of Optometry. Work with faculty liaisons during the school year and at the Annual Meeting.

Committee Description: Looking to expand the Education Committee for session offered outside of the Annual Meeting. This person(s) would work directly with the OVDRA Education Committee Chair and any subcommittees as appropriate (ie VT subcommittee chair for VT education offerings) and the OVDRA office to propose, organize and execute additional education offerings. This person (s) would also be responsible for vetting outside speakers who want to represent OVDRA at outside meetings to make sure their presentation and philosophy is similar to that of OVDRA.

Committee Description: The membership committee, comprising individuals dedicated to enhancing OVDRA’s outreach, has engaged in thoughtful discussions to boost membership. Collaborating with state coordinators, we have implemented various strategies. In the upcoming year, our focus includes strengthening membership both within each state and internationally.

National Membership Engagement Chair
Status: Open

OVDRA is seeking a dedicated volunteer to serve as National Membership Engagement Chair. This role will co-chair the Membership Committee alongside the International Membership Engagement Chair and play an important part in shaping OVDRA’s membership initiatives.

Volunteer Time Estimate: Varies

Eligibility Requirements: Must be a current OVDRA member in good standing and plan to renew their membership for 2026.
Commitment to co-chair with the International Membership Engagement Chair

Committee Description: The vision therapists committee is divided into several subcommittees: Education, Social and Membership, Mentorship, and Social Media/Blog/Journal. Each subcommittee is overseen by a chairperson (some still needed).

Volunteer Time Estimate: No time estimate given
Minimum Requirements for this specific role: We ask that members of any of the committees serve one full year (AM to AM); multiple years are welcome. Individual work load on each sub committee varies with mentorship and social being very intense for a short time whereas education has monthly duties. All members of the Vision Therapist Committee must be a current member of OVDRA. Members of the Mentor subcommittee must be a COVT.

Committee Description: To increase awareness of vision therapy and rehab to the following three target groups through social media and the OVDRA website: 1) Potential patients and parents of potential patients to encourage them to ultimately click the locate a doctor link; 2) Students to engage them and encourage membership and Members to encourage fellowship; 3) Allied professionals so they understand how an optometrist can be a significant member of a multi-disciplinary team.

Committee Description: Members of the Research Committee have two major activities: Review abstracts for annual meeting and review proposals for research funding.

Committee Description: The current committee shares roles and responsibilities including: Reaching out to new grads to inform them about the scholarship program, creation of the application each year, reviewing applications and deciding winners each year, determine required courses for winners to attend, planning of reception at annual meeting.

Task Force Member

Volunteer Time Estimate: We have goals/deadlines set throughout the year that the committee works on as a team. The greatest time commitment is at the annual meeting when we will need to set up the reception and congratulate the winners.

Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Graduate of optometry school, residents are welcome.

Committee Description: We the state coordinators work on a state level to bring education to the members, act as liaison to other organizations in the state, provide a support system and act as an information go to for state members and students.

Regional Coordinators
Regional coordinators will interact with the state coordinators in their regions and act as liaison with the chair of the state coordinators.
Volunteer Time Estimate: 1 hour per week
Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Fellowship
Deputies in Each State
These are individuals that over several years will assist the state coordinators with the intent of eventually taking over as state coordinator.
Volunteer Time Estimate: 1-2 hours per month
Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Associate or Fellowship
Study Group Organizer in Each State
These individuals will work with the membership committee liaison volunteer to implement ideas to increase membership in their state.
Volunteer Time Estimate: Study group organizer in each state 30 minutes daily for the month leading up to the study group. Otherwise 1 hour per week.

Co-Chair of the Fellowship Committee
Responsibilities include:

  1. Find mentors (updating the list) and match candidates with mentors. Email doctors who are FOVDR asking if they can volunteer to be mentors. Email candidates a list of questions so that you can understand their background, then find a match.
  2. Send reminders to mentors of the Fellowship deadlines.
  3. Field questions from candidates throughout the year (done in conjunction with Co-Chair). These can range from what is their candidate number, to if a specific case fits the requirements.
  4. Contact the candidates who have an Incomplete (do not pass) the Oral Interviews.
  5. Review all submissions from candidates with Incomplete, and find strategies to fill gaps. This might include directing them to material to study, reviewing material with them, referring back to mentor, pairing with new mentor or visiting a local FOVDR doctor.
  6. Periodically update Action Plan in collaboration with Co-Chair to send to At-large representative on OVDRA Board of directors
  7. Organize social for Fellow candidates at OVDRA annual meeting in collaboration with Co-chair.
  8. Road to Fellowship slide presentation at OVDRA annual meeting with Co-Chair, followed by question and answer session with potential candidates.
Volunteer Time Estimate: April to mid-October 3 to 4 hours per month, mid-October to January 2 hour per month, Feb until the Annual Meeting 2 to 3 hours per month
Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Must be a OVDRA Fellow and member of OVDRA 
Mentorship for Fellowship Candidates
Guide candidates through the Fellowship process. Review and give feedback on 6 open book questions, and 3 case report as well as prepare candidates for the oral interview which are held before the annual meeting. Direct candidates to sources of information, and remind them of upcoming deadlines.
Volunteer Time Estimate: May to mid-October 3 to 4 hours / month (Guide candidates for open book questions and case reports, give feedback and review candidate submissions) , mid-October to January 1 hour / month (help candidate respond to questions from exam board, and study for the multiple choice exam), Feb until the Annual Meeting 2 to 3 hours / month (help candidates prepare for the oral interview)
Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Must be a OVDRA Fellow and member of OVDRA
