Current available roles as of August 2020

Committee Description: Increase student, resident and faculty awareness of developmental optometry, involvement in COVD and COVD membership. Enhance student/resident/extern/faculty relationships, as well as that with private practice doctors in the area of developmental vision care. Coordinate student/resident travel grant program and COVD Student Associate Programs. Coordinate student/resident presentations and meetings at National Meeting and monitor Resident Booth in exhibit hall. Coordinate communications with national student and resident liaisons and develop communications with Schools of Optometry. Work with faculty liaisons during the school year and at the Annual Meeting.

  1. Work with IO to identify practice opportunities for student/residents
  2. Invite doctors with openings to attend mixer at Annual Meeting
  3. Help students/residents mingle/meet with doctors hiring based on location, practice modality, etc.

Residency List

  1. Work with the National Resident Liaison to identify ACOE residency programs related to pediatric optometry, vision therapy, developmental vision, neuro-vision rehabilitation
  2. Keep an updated list of residency supervisors, residency directors, current residents, and contact information

Coordinate Optometric Educators’ Meeting at Annual Meeting

Committee Description: Looking to expand the Education Committee for session offered outside of the Annual Meeting. This person(s) would work directly with the COVD Education Committee Chair and any subcommittees as appropriate ( ie VT subcommittee chair for VT education offerings ) and the COVD office to propose, organize and execute additional education offerings. This person (s) would also be responsible for vetting outside speakers who want to represent COVD at outside meetings to make sure their presentation and philosophy is similar to that of COVD.

Volunteer Time Estimate: Quarterly updates provided to Education Committee Chair with a Goal to provide one education offering quarterly outside the Annual Meeting (“AM”). Ongoing project through the year. Annually review and recruit potential speakers for meetings outside the AM. Post Annual Meeting Survey and Data review to identify future education needs. TIME ESTIMATE??

Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Familiarity with adult learners and presentation styles that resonate with intended audience (both in person and virtual). Willingness to work with outside organizations (state optometric groups, partnering with other meetings) to organize partnerships for COVD Education, familiarly with these organizations a bonus.

Committee Description: We the people of the membership committee have spent time discussing ideas to increase membership each year at the annual meeting. We have work with the state coordinators to implement our ideas. This year we will be adding a number of new positions to bolster membership in each state and internationally.

Statistician
The Statistician will need to keep up with the membership statistics in order to better understand the dynamics of the membership of the organization. They will need to point out the key areas that trending both downward and upward.

State Coordinator Liaison State Coordinator
Liaison will be assisting the state coordinators to increase membership in their states. They will need to help create programs and ideas to attract general optometrists to the COVD.

Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Liaison positions would preferably be associates and fellows.
International Outreach Liaison
International outreach liaison will be reaching out to international optometrists to create additional international chapters. There are lots of countries out there with optometrists who are interested in learning more. By helping them start building interest and bringing in additional members we can continue to establish worldwide chapters

Committee Description: The vision therapists committee is divided into several subcommittees: Education, Social and Membership, Mentorship, and Social Media/Blog/Journal. Each subcommittee is overseen by a chairperson (some still needed).

Education Committee
Creates online study groups, sends suggestions to the COVD Education committee for speakers, creates list serv education opportunities. Chairperson: Currently Tom Headline, COVT. Members of committee needed. Therapists willing to lead/teach online study groups also needed.

Social and Membership
This committee is in charge of planning and implementing the therapist social gathering at the AM, they also run the VT Social page on FB. In addition, they work with the COVD office and membership committee to welcome new COVD members as they join. Current chairperson: Kyndal Solien. Needed volunteers who are willing to concentrate on membership needs.

Social Media/Blog Journal
Committee chair needed. This committee works to create content to submit to the COVD blog committee or to the COVD office (for marketing) for items specific to the therapist community. Submission needed, members will to brainstorm ideas and ask other therapist for submissions needed.

Committee Description: To increase awareness of vision therapy and rehab to the following three target groups through social media and the COVD website: 1) Potential patients and parents of potential patients to encourage them to ultimately click the locate a doctor link; 2) Students to engage them and encourage membership and Members to encourage fellowship; 3) Allied professionals so they understand how an optometrist can be a significant member of a multi-disciplinary team.

Members and Co-Chair

The committee consists of 5-6 members including one chair and one co-chair. The roles of all general committee members is to contribute to three core functions. These core functions are the following: Providing content on the blog to feed into facebook to ultimately drive traffic to the website. Disseminate membership news from the board or from the international office. Build awareness through success stories, evidence based research (VDR article summaries), sit downs with membership.

The role of the Chair – To keep the momentum going on content creation, activity and committee member engagement.

Volunteer Time Estimate: Approximately 1 hour per week including a committee virtual meeting once a month. Participation at the committee meeting at the annual COVD meeting (45 minutes to an hour) and approximately 1-2 hours of time during the annual meeting.

Minimum Requirements for this specific role: Chairs and Co-Chairs must be fellows. Committee members must be official members of COVD and can be an optometrist or therapist.

Committee Description: Members of the Research Committee have two major activities: Review abstracts for annual meeting and review proposals for research funding.

Volunteer Roles Needed

Review Abstracts

Approximately 100 abstracts are submitted to the meeting each year. All committee members review the abstracts and make recommendations to either accept or reject the abstract.

Volunteer Time Estimate: The abstracts are typically reviewed in the beginning of December. The committee member is given two weeks to complete the reviews.

Review Research Proposals

Approximately 10 research proposals are submitted each year. All committee members review proposals in the following areas: 1) Research questions are consistent with mission statement for COVD; 2) Methodology is scientifically sound; 3) Ability to complete project in proposed timeline; and 4) Appropriateness of the budget. After the evaluation the reviewer will then rank each project.

Volunteer Time Estimate: The abstracts are typically reviewed in the beginning of December. The committee member is given two weeks to complete the reviews.

Committee Description: The current committee shares roles and responsibilities including: Reaching out to new grads to inform them about the scholarship program, creation of the application each year, reviewing applications and deciding winners each year, determine required courses for winners to attend, planning of reception at annual meeting.

Volunteer Time Estimate: We have goals/deadlines set throughout the year that the committee works on as a team. The greatest time commitment is at the annual meeting when we will need to set up the reception and congratulate the winners.

Committee Description: We the state coordinators work on a state level to bring education to the members, act as liaison to other organizations in the state, provide a support system and act as an information go to for state members and students.

These individuals will work with the membership committee liaison volunteer to implement ideas to increase membership in their state.

Membership Liaison in Each State

Volunteer Roles Needed
Mentorship for Fellowship Candidates
Guide candidates through the Fellowship process. Review and give feedback on 6 open book questions, and 3 case report as well as prepare candidates for the oral interview which are held before the annual meeting. Direct candidates to sources of information, and remind them of upcoming deadlines.
Volunteer Time Estimate: May to mid-October 3 to 4 hours / month (Guide candidates for open book questions and case reports, give feedback and review candidate submissions) , mid-October to January 1 hour / month (help candidate respond to questions from exam board, and study for the multiple choice exam), Feb until the Annual Meeting 2 to 3 hours / month (help candidates prepare for the oral interview)
