What career status are you currently in? I have been in practice for 33 years and working in the field of behavioral optometry for over 40 years.
Why do you feel a membership with OVDRA is beneficial? I feel it is very important to stay involved in optometric organizations that support vision therapy and vision rehabilitation. I also like that OVDRA provides ongoing education, vision therapy certification and fellowships in the field. Lastly, OVDRA provides public service messages that support our work and has regular outreach and clubs at the optometry schools.
Were there any obstacles you had to overcome while obtaining your membership? Of course starting out I had student loans and was making very little so membership dues were an expense but I wanted to get my fellowship as soon as the 3 year requirement was met and felt it important to be a member.
What member benefits have you utilized and found useful? I have found the annual congresses important opportunities to continue my education and network with fellow optometrists in this niche. I also have used some of their white papers and promotional materials.
What would you tell your colleagues about OVDRA that are considering membership with us? That it is important to support this organization and there are many useful support materials on the website including the doctor locator.
Have you attended the OVDRA Annual Meeting? If so, how many have you attended? Yes, at least 16+
What do you find most beneficial about attending the annual meeting? The coursework and the camaraderie. I also really enjoy the in depth pre-meeting courses.
What OVDRA CE’s have you attended outside of the Annual Meeting? None to date.
As a member of OVDRA you have the opportunity to serve the organization. Do you currently volunteer, either on a committee or as a mentor for OVDRA? Why and what does it mean to you? Currently I only mentor potential fellows.
Did you use your OVDRA member benefit for certification or maintenance of certification? If you are not a FOVDR or COVT, do you plan to be? Yes. |
