Partnering with a Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation (NOR) Optometrist
NOR-trained optometrists (residency in VT/NOR or OVDRA Board Certification) diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate neurological conditions that impair vision and visual processing. Choosing the right partner ensures thorough evaluation and coordinated,
multidisciplinary recovery.
Why specialized training matters
Patients with acquired brain injury (ABI), head trauma, or vestibular disorders often present with complex visual processing needs that extend beyond a routine refraction and ocular health check. NOR optometrists are trained to evaluate
the full visual system—including ocular motor skills, visual perception, and integration with vestibular and proprioceptive inputs—then coordinate care with Neurology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology.
- Comprehensive visual processing evaluation
- Coordination across the rehabilitation team
- Targeted treatment plans that support recovery
Symptoms & Diagnoses that warrant a NOR Evaluation
ABI can lead to diagnoses requiring a multi-disciplinary plan. As part of the rehab team, NOR and therapy (NORT) help decode symptoms and launch recovery-focused treatment.
NOR Therapeutic Tools & Services
- Glasses: lenses, prism, tints & filters
- Work/School accommodations
- NORT: visual skills therapy; visual processing; multi-sensory integration; visual perception, memory & attention; hemianopsia training
Referral Tools
An immediate NOR referral can uncover visual processing deficits that may interfere with other testing and therapies. Use these screening surveys to flag patients who could benefit from a full evaluation. When indicated, lenses and filters
can provide quick symptom relief to unlock more impactful rehabilitation.
Tip: if a Life Symptom Checklist total score is > 20, a referral for NOR evaluation is warranted.
